At Pedal Set Go, we are committed to reducing the risks of modern slavery and ensuring ethical practices in our operations and supply chain. Although we are a micro-business primarily operating in Australia, we recognise that modern slavery is a hidden and pervasive crime, with millions of people worldwide affected through forced labour, human trafficking, servitude, and other forms of exploitation.
Modern slavery involves exploiting individuals through force, coercion, deception, or abuse of power. It can manifest in industries worldwide, including agriculture, manufacturing, and service sectors, and is often hidden, making it difficult to detect. The Asia-Pacific region, including Australia, is not exempt, with the highest prevalence of forced labour globally.
Providing fair and rewarding work is central to our purpose. From our small team of bike educators to the suppliers we partner with, we aim to uphold fairness and dignity throughout our operations. At Pedal Set Go, we take proactive steps to minimise the risks of modern slavery and human trafficking, recognising that even in low-risk environments, vulnerable individuals can still fall through the gaps.
We understand that modern slavery is not always obvious, and perpetrators often go to great lengths to hide their actions. To address these challenges:
We prioritise direct relationships with local suppliers, minimising reliance on intermediaries that can obscure labour practices.
We perform due diligence on our supply chain, even for one-off purchases, ensuring transparency wherever possible.
We remain vigilant about potential risks of exploitation in the goods and services we procure, particularly when sourcing from industries or regions with known vulnerabilities.
At Pedal Set Go, we align our practices with global human rights and labour standards:
The International Labour Organisation (ILO) Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work
While we don’t have large-scale operations, we are committed to embedding ethical principles into our work, including:
Providing fair wages and safe working conditions to our staff.
Maintaining clear grievance procedures for staff to report any concerns related to labour practices or potential exploitation.
We strive to increase awareness of modern slavery risks and enhance our preventative measures.
Training and Awareness: Our team is educated about modern slavery, with a focus on the hidden risks within industries directly relevant to our work. We highlight the growing exploitation in the gig economy, where delivery riders, often on bicycles, face precarious conditions such as low pay, lack of rights, and unsafe working environments. These issues disproportionately affect migrant workers and those with limited access to employment protections.
Given our work in bike education and maintenance, we are committed to:
Raising awareness among staff about how gig economy practices can contribute to exploitation.
Equipping our team with knowledge to identify indicators of exploitation, particularly in interactions with delivery riders.
Promoting fair treatment and advocating for safe and equitable conditions for all bike riders.
Supplier Collaboration: We engage with suppliers to discuss ethical sourcing and encourage alignment with fair labour practices.
Transparency: We remain committed to assessing and improving our practices and supply chain relationships to address hidden risks.
Fairness and integrity are at the heart of everything we do at Pedal Set Go. We believe that tackling modern slavery is a shared responsibility, and we will continue to adapt and strengthen our efforts to ensure our operations and supply chain remain free from exploitation.
This statement reflects Pedal Set Go's commitment to ethical practices and reducing modern slavery risks in our operations and supply chain. It applies to the financial year ending 2025 and has been approved by the owners and founders, Julie Lawrence and Lisa Ditlef-Nielsen.
